"I see ski tips and next thing you know, you just kind of go into 'go mode' and just dig them out until you can find his face. He was in total shock, like all he wanted to find was his wife."
"Everybody needs to be aware. When you go out in that deep snow, you need to ski with a partner, and you need to be trained. You need to have a shovel probe. You need to have all the right stuff."
"Deep snow, it's the great equalizer. He said that terrain is pretty advanced, and the deep snow only emphasized that."
At Palisades Tahoe on February 18, skiers Carson Schmidt and his friend discovered a man buried in deep snow during their first run of the day. They immediately began digging and successfully extracted him, finding him in shock and disoriented. The rescued man was blue when freed but managed to ski away and reunite with his wife. Schmidt emphasized that deep snow presents significant dangers and stressed the critical importance of avalanche preparedness. He recommends that skiers in advanced terrain carry proper safety equipment including shovels and probes, ski with partners, and receive appropriate training before venturing into deep snow conditions.
