Goldminer's Daughter Lodge remains the heart of Alta's slopeside experience.
Briefly

Goldminer's Daughter Lodge remains the heart of Alta's slopeside experience.
"Goldminer's Daughter Lodge, located at Alta Ski Area's Wildcat Base, is one of the last remaining independent ski lodges in the United States. Although Alta Ski Area does not own or operate the property, its prime slopeside location - just steps from the Collins lift - has made it the resort's de facto base lodge since the early 1960s. Commonly known as GMD, the lodge was built by Jim and Elfriede Shane."
"After serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, the Shanes moved to Utah and became deeply involved in the local ski community. Jim Shane worked as a ski patroller and later served as a division chair for the National Ski Patrol. The couple opened the Goldminer's Daughter Lodge for the 1962 ski season on the site of a former mining saloon. Originally conceived as a day lodge, the property included just six guest rooms and employee dormitories with shared bathrooms."
Goldminer's Daughter Lodge sits slopeside at Alta Ski Area's Wildcat Base and functions as the resort's de facto base lodge despite independent ownership. Jim and Elfriede Shane opened the lodge in 1962 on the site of a former mining saloon after relocating to Utah following World War II. The property began as a day lodge with six guest rooms and shared employee dormitories and expanded in the late 1960s and early 1970s to house more skiers and seasonal staff. Ownership transferred in 2000 to longtime employees Ross Olson and Jenn Life-Guggenberger, preserving a family-oriented, independent operation amid early-2000s visitation challenges.
