Kicking Horse, BC, Backcountry Report: Explosive Christmas Eve Powder in a Lovely Storm - SnowBrains
"I met up with Todd in a windy snowstorm. We decided on one mellow sidecountry lap, then home for some R&R. We weren't exactly sure what to expect, but we guessed the wind may have pressed the powder and changed the landscape. That was confirmed after our first few turns, but then things changed. Only a short ways down, the wind stopped, the snow deepened, and the skiing became world-class..."
"We had so much fun, we lost each other in the lower woods above the creek. I hooted and yipped to no avail. We both skinned up and found each other very early in our climb. I was bushed... It took all I had just to get out of there. Once back to the ski hill, I took the green circle groomer, zigzagging all the way down. I hit the grocery store, locked myself in my hotel room, and gorged all evening."
"I was a bit bummed with the Canadian programming,g to be honest... I've spent quite a few Christmases alone in ski town motel rooms, and it's made right by TNT or TBS playing "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" and/or "A Christmas Story" playing on a loop. "A Christmas Story" was my number one for decades, but a 2020 Jackson Hole Motel 6 Christmas sent me hurtling back to "Christmas Vacation" with Chevy Chase."
I awoke late and tired and met Todd in a windy snowstorm. We skied one mellow sidecountry lap, expecting wind-packed powder and altered terrain. After initial turns the wind ceased, the snow deepened, and the skiing transformed into deep, fluffy, falling powder. We skied enthusiastically and briefly lost each other in the lower woods above the creek; hooting went unanswered but both skinned up and reunited early in the climb. Exhaustion followed; the descent used a green circle groomer. I shopped, locked into a motel room, gorged food, and watched films, missing usual holiday movie programming but finding comfort in Dune and White Christmas.
