"I have been given a second lease on life. I noticed in Garmisch [Germany] that I was having one panic attack after another. I tried everything, with hypnosis and so forth, I felt really good, but as soon as I stood in the starting gate, my body refused."
"I'm no longer willing to risk my life the way I should. I am not prepared to risk it all anymore."
Niels Hintermann announced his retirement from alpine skiing, citing the physical and psychological effects of cancer. The 30-year-old Swiss speed specialist withdrew from a race in Courchevel, stating he was done skiing. He revealed that his last race was in Crans-Montana and expressed unwillingness to risk his life. Hintermann was diagnosed with lymph node cancer in October 2024, which led to a year off for treatment. Although he made a comeback, he experienced panic attacks that affected his performance, leading to his decision to retire.
