Being dropped for Hampton 'felt unjust' - Earps
"Former England goalkeeper Mary Earps claims she told Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman she was rewarding "bad behaviour" when Hannah Hampton was recalled to the squad after previously being dropped for being "disruptive and unreliable"."
""I felt protective of the good energy we now had in goalkeeper training and the morale of the wider team," she explained. "Bad behaviour is being rewarded.""
""This felt unjust. My eyes welled with tears. "It was a choice that went against my core values. The affinity I had for Sarina and this job - one I'd given every last cell of myself to - was being destroyed, the trust and respect evaporating.""
Mary Earps objected to Hannah Hampton's recall, saying the decision rewarded perceived bad behaviour and disrupted goalkeeper training and wider team morale. Hampton had been an unused substitute at the 2022 Euros and was subsequently left out of squads amid reports of poor attitude and a coach description of a personal matter. The coach recalled Hampton in early 2023, and Hampton later became first choice for Euro 2025, playing a key role as England retained the title. Earps remained number one through the 2023 World Cup and said the selection decisions felt unjust and eroded her trust.
