France defeated Ukraine 2-0 in their opening Group D World Cup qualifier, with Michael Olise and Kylian Mbappe scoring either side of half-time. Mbappe matched Thierry Henry with 51 international goals. Ousmane Dembele entered as a half-time substitute but was withdrawn in the 81st minute after appearing to suffer a hamstring injury. Paris Saint-Germain expressed anger that Dembele had played after a similar injury against Toulouse, but Didier Deschamps insisted the incidents were unrelated and that Dembele was fit when introduced. Deschamps indicated Dembele may miss the next qualifier against Iceland, while PSG hope he recovers for upcoming club fixtures.
