Yeray Alvarez has received a 10-month ban following a positive doping test taken after matches against Manchester United in the Europa League. The 30-year-old tested positive for canrenone, a diuretic that can act as a masking agent, which was present in a medicine used to prevent hair loss after his cancer treatment. Alvarez's defence said he mistakenly ingested the substance while treating alopecia. UEFA accepted that the ingestion was not intentional but ruled a non-intentional anti-doping rule violation. The provisional suspension accepted in June was backdated. He may train from February 2, 2026, and return to play on April 2, 2026. Alvarez has made 257 appearances and won the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana.
