The legend of El Loco - 30 years since the scorpion kick
"I thought 'no problem'. It came out perfect."
""I was confused," Tyler tells BBC Sport. "In real time, nobody would do that, why would they do it? It was like there was something mysterious going on. It was totally unexpected. He foiled Jamie Redknapp and he fooled the lot of us on the gantry!""
""There was this silence, people were just trying to fathom what had just happened,""
The scorpion kick originated when a child bicycle-kicked a ball during a soda advert shoot in Colombia, inspiring Rene Higuita to practice the move. He incorporated the manoeuvre into training and warm-ups until the moment arrived at Wembley on 6 September 1995. Jamie Redknapp miscued a shot that dropped over Higuita's head, prompting him to leap forward and propel his heels backward to clear the ball while landing on his hands. The clearance drew immediate disbelief from commentators and officials, laughter from the England bench, and stunned silence from the crowd as spectators tried to process the spectacle.
