The trophy is awarded to the player who scores the most goals throughout a season. Gyokeres scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting across two seasons in Portugal, which secured his transfer to Arsenal. He has scored three goals in his first five Premier League matches for Arsenal. The Gerd Muller Trophy had been won previously by a Premier League player only once, by Erling Haaland in 2023. Gyokeres is the first Swede to win an award at a Ballon d'Or ceremony.
