State of Homelessness: Affordable housing still issue for Vacaville homeless
""We've seen a huge increase, largely due to the rising cost of living and the severe lack of affordable housing," Banta said. "Solano County is also above the state average for first-time homelessness.""
""The truth is that we are working together," she said, "but we need more than that. We need affordable housing.""
""The need is outgrowing what we are doing," she said, "but that doesn't mean that we aren't making strides.""
Homelessness in Vacaville has increased tremendously over the past year, driven by rising cost of living and a severe lack of affordable housing. Opportunity House shelters about 100 residents annually, provides street outreach, aftercare, and youth programs, and has received many first-time homelessness calls. Solano County rates for first-time homelessness exceed the state average. Partnerships among Opportunity House, the county, and faith-based groups exist, but affordable housing supply remains inadequate. Cash assistance of about $500 monthly can prevent eviction. Recent steps include a countywide CAP Solano JPA, a $4 million rental assistance fund, and the Vallejo Navigation Center, while federal safety-net cuts worsen demand.
