Xen Project announces five years of support for all releases
"The project previously provided around 1.5 years of full support for new releases, then security-only support until three years after a release. The new scheme, which applies starting with last year's Xen 4.20, provides full support for three years, and security support until five years after release."
"While the motivation aligns with traditional LTS goals, using LTS terminology can imply that only selected releases receive extended support. Our aim is consistent, predictable security support across all releases. This scheme strengthens Xen's position in embedded and automotive use cases, while keeping the stable and security maintenance effort sustainable."
The Xen Project updated its stable branch support policy to provide five years of total support for all releases starting with Xen 4.20. Previously, releases received approximately 1.5 years of full support followed by security-only support until three years after release. The new policy offers three years of full support and two additional years of security-only support. Earlier versions 4.17 through 4.19 also receive security-only support up to five years total. The project deliberately avoided designating specific releases as long-term support versions to ensure consistent, predictable security maintenance across all releases. This approach strengthens Xen's position in embedded and automotive markets while maintaining sustainable maintenance efforts.
