Hootsuite Is in Hot Water With Customers for Its ICE Contract. Its Response Hasn't Helped
"Over the last 24 hours there has been a broad emotional and passionate reaction from our people,"
"The decision has created a divided company, and this is not the kind of company I came to lead. I-and the rest of the management team-share the concerns our people have expressed. As a result, we have decided not to proceed with the deal with ICE."
"'Trojan Horse Deal' that could turn into a seven-figure contract."
Hootsuite began working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in July 2024 under a contract running to 2029 with potential value of $2.8 million. Hootsuite then secured a $95,000 pilot project with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in September, described internally as a 'Trojan Horse Deal' that could expand to a seven-figure contract. The relationship triggered employee and customer backlash echoing a 2020 controversy that led Hootsuite to cancel an ICE deal. Hootsuite committed to maintaining the ICE contract only if ICE follows Hootsuite's terms of service prohibiting law enforcement, surveillance, and tracking uses. Online outrage continues amid public scrutiny of U.S. immigration agencies after the killings of two Minneapolis residents.
