Exclusive: Sepideh Moafi Talks Dr. Al-Hashimi & Dr. Robby's Chemistry On 'The Pitt'
"It's not just about the procedural accuracy. It's about honoring these stories and the emotional and ethical terrain that doctors navigate every day that reflect similar terrains within us. It's kind of like an onion peel. The more you pull back, the more there is, and the more it moves you."
"I could get emotional just thinking about this - just how so many women, especially women of color, have to work so much harder, have to sort of build armor to protect themselves."
"I love playing characters that challenge people's perceptions"
Sepideh Moafi generally dislikes medical shows, but found The Pitt’s radical authenticity inspiring. Moafi plays Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, brought in to lead the emergency department while Dr. Robby takes a three-month sabbatical. Baran proposes changes to improve the ED, including dropping the department's nickname and embracing artificial intelligence, which prompts resistance from colleagues and viewers. Moafi watched Dr. Robby become a beloved figure and recognized the fortitude required to challenge his domain. Moafi highlights how many women, especially women of color, must work harder and build protective armor. Baran’s leadership combines real strength with teaching through vulnerability.
