"Starting as a webseries in 2007, it followed director Matt Johnson and musician Jay McCarrol as fictionalized versions of themselves, members of a band (confusingly called Nirvanna the Band, no relation) who undergo increasingly more complicated schemes to try and book a show at the Rivoli in Toronto. Episodes parodied everything from to Jurassic Park, and went so far as to use whole tracks from the score of the inspirations (an element that almost put the kibosh on the release of the upcoming feature film)."
"For example, in an episode parodying Daredevil, Matt goes blind from watching Star Wars too close to the TV screen, so when they bring their camera crew into the actual Toronto opening night of The Force Awakens, they get kicked out for talking. Now, 18 years after the web series first aired, the boys are back for one more adventure, and it takes everything to the absolute limit, morphing a cult classic franchise into a time travel story that rivals Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."
Nirvanna the Band the Show began as a 2007 webseries following director Matt Johnson and musician Jay McCarrol as fictionalized versions of themselves who craft elaborate schemes to book a show at Toronto's Rivoli. Episodes parodied major films and used original score tracks. A 2017 Vice TV adaptation executive produced by Spike Jonze expanded the series' scope and notoriety. The feature directed by Matt Johnson opens in 2008 then jumps to 2025, with schemes involving smuggling wire cutters into the CN Tower and attempted skydiving. A staged fake time machine accidentally sends Matt and Jay back to 2008, turning the plot into a chaotic time-travel comedy.
