"One day after a blowout loss to the Royals, the Toronto Blue Jays get a chance once again to solidify themselves as a playoff team and quickly erase any memories of the 20-1 drubbing at the hands of Kansas City from Friday. It's not as simple as a 'win and you're in' but a win for Toronto would go a long way at this time of the year."
"A win on Saturday would help alleviate a lot of frustrated feelings from the Blue Jays, but it's not the only thing they need to get in. A win combined with a loss by either the Tigers, the Red Sox (who are playing in Tampa Bay) or the Guardians (who are playing in Minnesota) would get the job done. A win would also snap a three game slide in which the Blue Jays have scored a combined two runs."
A Blue Jays victory on Saturday would substantially improve their chances to clinch a postseason spot and end a three-game stretch in which they scored only two runs. The team did not lose ground in the standings after the 20-1 loss because the Yankees and Tigers also suffered defeats, helping Toronto maintain its American League lead. Clinching scenarios include a Blue Jays win plus a loss by Detroit, Boston, or Cleveland. Toronto can also reach the playoffs without a win if Detroit and Boston lose while Cleveland drops both games of its doubleheader. Toronto is pursuing 90 wins for the first time since 2022.
