The Underground Sun is a living installation created by Xiaojing Yan in Milliken Mills Park, Markham, Ontario. Situated on a hill, the artwork is part of the city-wide exhibition, Learning From Mushroom, which features projects inspired by mycelial growth. Although the installation occupies over 750 square meters and features wooden stakes outlining its form, it is currently understated and lacks signage. Yan believes the project will take years to fully realize, as it consists entirely of perennial plants that need time to grow.
The Underground Sun is a living artwork in the most literal sense. It is fully composed of perennial plants, including yellow flowers such as goldenrod, evening primrose, and black-eyed Susans.
Rows of wooden stakes can be seen from the sidewalk. They plot a rough-hewn shape: a jagged form with creeping tendrils, meant to suggest the wispy, branch-like structure of a mycelial network.
