Unhoused residents of Dufferin Grove encampment protest eviction, say they feel unsafe in shelters | CBC News
""I'd rather sleep out here until I can find a proper place," said Cece Bella Cohen, one of about a dozen residents still living at the encampment as of Tuesday who were waiting to see if they'd be forcibly removed."
""A lot of the people who ended up [at shelters] also ended up coming back a day or two later because they were blown away by the conditions," she said."
"Eric Holmes, a spokesperson for the City of Toronto who was at the encampment Tuesday, told CBC Toronto the city is continuing outreach efforts to get residents into indoor housing. He said forceful evictions would only be carried out as a "last resort.""
A trespass notice ordered removal of tents and belongings from Dufferin Grove Park by 9 a.m. on Sept. 16 under city bylaws. About a dozen residents remained at the encampment, saying they feel safer there than in city shelters after experiencing unsanitary conditions, lack of privacy and rapid bed-turnover that can push clients back onto the street. City staff continued outreach to relocate residents to indoor housing, with security and police visible near the park. A city spokesperson said outreach is ongoing and that forceful evictions would be used only as a last resort. The city faced criticism after 2021 encampment clearings.
