Maple Leafs' Bo Groulx reflects on positives from first NHL game since 2023-24
"I think it was a work in progress, honestly. As the game went on, I felt better and better. First period, I felt kind of behind on the play a little bit, speed-wise and everything. Second period was a bit better, and third period I had my legs under me. I had a lot of speed in the neutral zone. I started to make a bit more plays in the neutral zone offensively."
"I think Chief really trusted me out there and in key situations. Big faceoff too at the end of the game, and throughout the game with PK time. I'm a defensive-minded guy; third-line centre is a perfect role for me. Defence first, I can chip in offensively."
Bo Groulx made his first NHL appearance since April 2024, playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs against Montreal. Starting on the third line with Easton Cowan and Nick Robertson, Groulx gradually found his rhythm as the game progressed. He struggled initially with speed and positioning in the first period but improved significantly by the third period, generating multiple scoring chances including a shot after a skilled deke around Noah Dobson. Coach Craig Berube responded to his improved play by increasing his ice time across all situations, including penalty kill and defensive zone draws. Groulx credited his family's presence at the Bell Centre and Berube's confidence for helping him settle into the game.
