The Ontario government is set to introduce new legislation aimed at combating auto theft by allowing police to search for and confiscate keyless electronic devices used for stealing vehicles. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria highlighted that items like fob programming devices and smartphone apps would be targeted, while lawful uses by dealers and services would be exempt. Although auto theft rates have decreased overall, this bill addresses the growing use of keyless technology by thieves. Additionally, a new team will be established to assist police in regions affected by high auto theft rates, particularly Peel, known for its significant theft statistics.
This will give police the strong tools they need to keep these devices off the streets.
Lawful use of these devices by auto dealers, repair services and roadside assistance would be exempt.
It is another step forward in supporting our community and our service in the critical work that they do every day to dismantle organized crime.
Peel Region was dubbed the 'auto theft capital of Canada' at a national summit on auto theft last year.
