Travel chaos as Dallas is forced to close BOTH its airports
"'This is a widespread issue affecting multiple departure facilities across the country,' the FAA said, noting that other airports in the network, ranging from ZLA in Los Angeles to ZMP in Minneapolis, are included in the affected routing."
"'The FAA is slowing flights into Dallas Love Field and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport due to a reported equipment issue at Dallas TRACON,' the FAA said in a statement, as reported by CNN."
"'We've lost all radar and phone communications,' the controller in the Dallas Love Field Air Traffic Control tower said in audio recorded by LiveATC.net."
"'I'm not departing anybody until we can get a system set up. We have no coms with the approach right now.'"
Ground stops at Dallas Love Field (DAL) and Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW) began Friday afternoon and were scheduled to continue until 5:00 p.m. Local start times were 1:58 p.m. at DAL and 1:54 p.m. at DFW. The outages affected radar and phone communications with Dallas TRACON, which handles arrivals and departures for both airports. More than 3,400 flights at DAL and over 5,200 flights at DFW experienced delays, with maximum delays exceeding three hours and an average delay around two hours and 15 minutes. The FAA warned the ground stop could be extended and advised travelers to contact airlines for updates.
