Barclays has announced it will prohibit trans women from using female bathrooms in its buildings to comply with a UK Supreme Court ruling that defines 'woman' and 'sex' as referring solely to biological women. CEO CS Venkatakrishnan emphasized the need for compliance and a commitment to providing appropriate facilities for all. The Equality and Human Rights Commission issued interim guidance aligning with this ruling, while also stressing the importance of access to facilities for all gender identities. This decision places Barclays among the first companies to revise policies in light of the ruling.
Following the supreme court ruling we believe that we have to comply with that by not allowing trans women to use female bathrooms. We strive in every way to make the appropriate facilities available in a comfortable way for people to use and to provide equality of opportunities and development.
The UK's equalities watchdog has issued interim guidance that trans women should not be permitted to use the women's facilities in workplaces or public-facing services.
