Doctor called into action while on the witness stand in Old Bailey trial
"That was unexpected. He told jurors: He did the right thing by using his medical skills and attending a lady in the public gallery. The good news is, she is absolutely fine. He added: You never know what is going to happen in court. There was a medical emergency and we were 99% better prepared than any other court in the country with a consultant paediatrician in court."
"The court has heard how baby Kaylani Kalanzi was on a child protection plan when she was admitted to hospital on July 8 last year, having been violently shaken with an impact to her head. She suffered catastrophic brain injuries as well as a broken leg and ribs, and died in hospital 15 days later. Kaylani's parents, Herbert Kalanzi, 35, and Nazli Merthoca, 24, from East Ham, east London, are accused of her murder and causing or allowing her death."
"A disturbance broke out in the public gallery on Thursday as he was being cross-examined. Events took a turn when a dock officer shouted oi and one juror began waving frantically as a grey-haired woman who had been observing the case appeared to collapse. Judge Mark Lucraft KC called for a break and Dr Bouvier rushed to assist the stricken woman in the gallery."
Consultant paediatrician Dr Charles Bouvier was giving evidence at the Old Bailey when a disturbance in the public gallery led to a woman collapsing. A dock officer shouted and a juror waved frantically before Judge Mark Lucraft KC called for a break. Dr Bouvier rushed to the gallery, used his medical skills to attend the woman, and the judge later confirmed she was absolutely fine. Judge Lucraft praised the response as beyond the call of duty and noted the court was unusually well-prepared with a consultant paediatrician present. The trial concerns the July admission and fatal injuries of three-month-old Kaylani Kalanzi, whose parents face murder charges.
