First people to be returned to France under UK's one in, one out' asylum deal
Briefly

Migrants who arrived in the UK on small boats began being detained under a new immigration policy, with a return anticipated within three weeks. The UK will refer these migrants to France within three days, expecting a response within 14 days. A small number of migrants will be initially selected for removal, while a reciprocal scheme will also allow the entry of asylum seekers from France. Detainees must meet stringent eligibility, suitability criteria, and undergo security checks. The Home Office is launching a campaign to discourage dangerous crossings.
Detentions began on Wednesday lunchtime, with those identified in the Channel boat being held in immigration removal centres pending their removal.
The UK would make referrals to France within three days, and the French authorities would be expected to respond within 14 days, officials said.
The reciprocal scheme allowing asylum seekers with links to the UK has also begun, with applicants needing to meet eligibility and suitability criteria.
As the one-in, one-out pilot scheme continues into its implementation phase, the Home Office is also launching a campaign warning people not to risk their money or their life.
