Grenfell Tower to be lit up at night as demolition begins
"Grenfell Tower will be lit up at night as a visible reminder of the tragedy while it is slowly taken down. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) said beams of lighting will be projected upwards from each corner of the tower during night time hours. The lights will underwent testing on Saturday, December 13, and begin shining on Sunday evening. The lights will be switched on no earlier than 5pm and turned off at 11pm every evening."
"Grenfell Next of Kin, an advocacy group for the immediate families of the deceased, feel this is more virtue signalling from MHCLG. The group said: Eight-and-a-half years on, the MHCLG Grenfell team and Memorial Commission hide behind Instagram virtue-signalling, empty gestures, and PR stunts, while ignoring our voices, demands, and agency. We live every day with the manslaughter of our parents, partners, children, and siblings our kin."
Grenfell Tower will be illuminated each night with beams projected from each corner while the building is gradually removed. Lights underwent testing on December 13 and began shining the following evening, scheduled no earlier than 5pm and switched off at 11pm. The beams will change to green on key dates such as June 14 and December 14. Some bereaved family members and a residents association criticised the installation as performative and said there was no consultation. Preparatory demolition work has been underway, including removal of a former plant room and the tower's top floor, in a likely two-year process.
