Up to 13,000 retired civil servants and ministers checked for 'serious' incorrect pension payments as one owes 280,000
Briefly

Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers announced that the National Shared Services Office (NSSO) is investigating significant pension errors affecting current and former public officials. These errors range widely in financial impact from a few hundred euros to €280,000. The affected groups include ministers, retired civil servants, and work-sharing retirees. Various types of pension miscalculations have been identified, prompting Chambers to demand urgent corrections by the NSSO, highlighting a critical failure in its duty to manage pay and pensions effectively.
The issues that have been brought to my attention by the NSSO are completely unacceptable. The NSSO has a fundamental duty it has failed.
The liabilities for this cohort range from a few hundred euros to €280,000, affecting current and former ministers along with retired civil servants.
Errors concerning pension deductions have affected most members of the current Government and former officials, with amounts to be recouped ranging from hundreds to the low €30,000s.
I have instructed the CEO of the NSSO that the multiple errors must be corrected by the NSSO as a matter of urgency.
