Academic unveiled as Reform by-election candidate
"not part of the establishment"
"It's a chance for hard-working, law-abiding people, taxpaying people from this seat to have their say on Keir Starmer and to make political history,"
"focused on the elections that we must have, not the elections that we don't have to have"
Reform UK has named commentator and academic Matt Goodwin as its candidate for the Gorton and Denton by-election. Goodwin said he was "not part of the establishment" and pledged to give constituency residents "a voice" in Westminster. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Andrew Gwynne on health grounds. Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham sought to stand but was blocked by Labour's National Executive Committee, prompting anger among some Labour MPs and a letter from around 50 of them urging reconsideration. Labour previously won the seat with a 13,000 majority in 2024; Reform UK came second with 5,000 votes. Goodwin called the by-election "a referendum on Keir Starmer."
