Council leader resigns after election postponement
"The work ahead of us is too important to let any disagreement over leadership be the cause of delay or disruption for our residents. Our community's needs must always come first."
"The transition to a new unitary council is a complex and massive undertaking."
"to remove any potential for distraction from the important task at hand"
"For the Labour party leadership to vote against that expressed will showed a disregard for the authority of council. The subsequent resignation speaks for itself."
Max Holloway will resign next week following a dispute over the postponement of local elections. Holloway led a Labour–Liberal Democrat coalition on Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council since May 2024 and had faced criticism from Lib Dem members. The Liberal Democrats triggered the dispute clause in the Joint Administration Agreement on 16 January. The Hertfordshire reorganisation will abolish all district and borough councils and the county council and replace them with unitary authorities responsible for existing services. Holloway said he was stepping down to avoid distraction during the complex unitary transition. Labour could lead a minority administration if no agreement is reached. Conservatives criticised the leadership vote against postponement as undermining council authority.
