David Tennant has condemned the negative portrayal of transgender individuals, drawing parallels to the oppressive Section 28 law that targeted the LGBTQ+ community in the past. While expressing goodwill towards JK Rowling, he emphasized the need for society to allow people to be themselves without judgment. Tennant’s comments were made during an appearance on the ITV1 show, where he noted the absurdity of the current treatment of transgender people as akin to historical prejudices. He also referenced the political implications surrounding the discourse on transgender rights, highlighting the ongoing societal challenges.
When I was a teenager, there was this thing that Mrs Thatcher's government introduced called section 28... which was basically saying it was illegal to talk about being gay in school, or to suggest that that might be a normal way of behaving.
We look back on that now as a medieval, absurd thing to try and say, and I think the way the trans community is being demonised and othered is exactly the same.
JK Rowling is a wonderful author who's created brilliant stories, and I wish her no ill will, but I hope that we can all as a society, just let people be.
I think it's become this kind of political football.
