Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced his party's ambition to reopen the closed blast furnaces in Port Talbot during a visit to the area. He stressed the need for reindustrialisation to boost Wales' economy, despite acknowledging the challenges ahead, such as the massive financial investment needed and structural issues with the existing furnaces. Farage emphasized the necessity for both public and private sector support and highlighted the goal of using British coal for steel production. Achieving these objectives before the 2026 Senedd elections remains uncertain given existing budget constraints.
Reopening a blast furnace is not an easy thing. We have to do everything we can to support the industry, including significant investment.
It is our ambition to see Wales reindustrialise to prosper and grow, but this requires the backing of the UK government.
