Labour peer who had sanctions lifted by China says it's 'meagre return' for UK
"At least they've gone in there and got something out of this,"
"I'm not going to have balloons on my door and throw confetti around to celebrate this -- I think it's a meagre return, and I'd like to see Jimmy Lai being released."
"as you would expect"
China lifted sanctions imposed in 2021 on seven UK parliamentarians accused of criticising its treatment of the Uyghur minority. The lifting was announced by the prime minister after talks with President Xi Jinping during Keir Starmer's visit to Beijing. Baroness Helena Kennedy, one of those sanctioned, welcomed that concessions were secured but described the outcome as a meagre return and urged the release of Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigner Jimmy Lai. The prime minister confirmed he raised Lai's case and the treatment of Uyghurs with President Xi. The original sanctioned group were members of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China.
