Lisa Nandy refers Telegraph sale to watchdogs over rightwing media plurality concerns
"Nandy said she was using her powers to refer the 500m deal for the Telegraph titles, which include the Daily Telegraph and its Sunday sister paper, to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and the media regulator Ofcom. She revealed she was minded to make the move last month, with officials saying Nandy had concerns that there is potential for loss in the plurality of voices, especially in the UK's right-leaning market."
"In a written statement, Nandy confirmed that she had concerns about the public interest of allowing the Telegraph titles to be bought by the Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT), which is privately owned by Lord Rothermere. These warrant further investigation, Nandy said. The public interest considerations concerned are the need for a sufficient plurality of views in each UK market for news media; and, the need for a sufficient plurality of persons with control of media enterprises serving every different UK audience."
Culture secretary Lisa Nandy has used her powers to refer the proposed £500m sale of the Telegraph titles to the Competition and Markets Authority and Ofcom because of public interest and plurality concerns. The deal would transfer the Daily Telegraph and its Sunday sister paper to Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT), privately owned by Lord Rothermere. Nandy identified the need for sufficient plurality of views in each UK news market and plurality of persons controlling media enterprises serving different UK audiences as public interest considerations. The CMA will report on competition issues and Ofcom on media public interest issues by mid-June. The referral follows a three-year sale saga in which previous deals have been agreed and then fallen apart or been blocked, and officials previously noted DMGT already holds a substantial share of the UK newspaper market.
