Plumber-turned-Greens MP Hannah Spencer wins UK by-election in blow to Keir Starmer
"I won't accept this victory tonight without calling out politicians and divisive figures who constantly scapegoat and blame our communities for all the problems in society. People were being 'bled dry' and were 'sick of our hard work making other people rich'."
"If we see a swing like this at the next general election, there will be a tidal wave of new Green MPs. The 27.5% swing from Labour to Greens demonstrated significant voter movement in this traditionally Labour-held constituency."
"I think what you saw was a coalition of Islamists and woke progressives that came together to dominate a constituency. Reform had 'embarrassed Labour in one of their strongest seats' with their second-place finish."
In a Greater Manchester by-election, Labour suffered a major defeat, finishing third behind the Green Party and Reform UK. Hannah Spencer, a councillor and plumber, won for the Greens with 14,980 votes and a 4,402-vote majority. Reform UK's Matt Goodwin received 10,578 votes, while Labour's Angeliki Stogia got 9,364 votes, a significant drop from 18,555 in the 2024 general election. Spencer, becoming the Green Party's fifth MP, criticized divisive politicians and scapegoating in her victory speech. The 27.5% swing from Labour to Greens prompted Green Party leader Zack Polanski to predict a potential wave of Green MPs at the next general election. Reform's Goodwin claimed the result showed Labour's embarrassment in one of their strongest seats.
