"In an already unsafe world, cutting aid risks alienating key allies and will make improving children's health and education in Commonwealth countries more difficult. We risk creating more opportunities for regimes who don't share our values."
The UK government is reducing overseas development aid allocations, with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office announcing changes to parliament. The ODA budget will decrease from 0.48% of GDP in 2025/26 to 0.37% in 2026/27, reaching 0.3% by 2027/28. Labour MPs, including former international development minister Gareth Thomas, oppose these cuts, warning they risk alienating allies and creating opportunities for adversarial powers like China to expand influence. The reductions follow the prime minister's announcement over a year ago to lower aid spending from 0.5% to 0.3% of GDP.
