UK ministers accept $1m from Meta amid social media ban consultation
"People across the UK could benefit from faster, safer and more reliable public services as leading British AI specialists join government to modernise critical systems used every day from public safety to transport maintenance."
"What's Meta getting for its million dollars?"
"When it comes to big tech, there's no such thing as a free lunch."
"This is yet more evidence of the UK government's alarmingly close relationship with Trump-supporting US tech giants,"
UK ministers accepted $1 million from Meta to fund development of AI systems for defence, national security and transport. The funding will pay four British AI experts coordinated by the Alan Turing Institute to support healthcare, police, transport and other critical public services. DSIT highlighted potential benefits including faster, safer and more reliable services through modernised systems from public safety to transport maintenance. Meta executives held 50 meetings with ministers in the past two years, among the highest levels of direct access for technology companies. The government is consulting on a ban on social media use by under-16s, which would significantly affect Instagram. Campaign group Foxglove questioned what Meta receives in return and warned of alarmingly close ties between ministers and US tech firms.
