UK to bear transport costs of one in, one out' asylum seeker deal with France
Briefly

The UK will cover the transport costs of asylum seekers under a new agreement with France, allowing for a one in, one out exchange system. This deal, which must be renewed by 11 June next year and can be terminated with a month’s notice, aims to manage the influx of asylum seekers crossing the Channel. Initially, it will apply to approximately 50 individuals. The agreement stipulates that individuals with pending asylum claims cannot be removed, and France retains the right to deny any requests based on specific grounds.
The agreement allows the UK to return one asylum seeker who arrived irregularly in exchange for taking an individual from France with a stronger asylum claim.
Under the deal, the UK bears all transport costs related to the readmission of asylum seekers, covering all expenses from designated locations to the UK.
The deal applies initially to about 50 asylum seekers, as Home Office sources indicate its limited scale amid increasing pressure on the UK government.
As of 2025, 25,436 people have crossed the Channel in small boats, marking a 48% increase from the previous year's figures.
