""There is no statutory requirement for Members of Parliament to provide bilingual communications [in English and Welsh],""
""almost every elector speaks English""
""an incredible lack of respect and a dinosaur-like attitude""
""a negative attitude towards the Welsh language""
Jo Stevens, serving as Welsh Secretary and MP for Cardiff East, told a constituent she only used English on leaflets and social media because it is spoken by almost every elector. She stated that there is no statutory requirement for MPs to provide bilingual communications in English and Welsh. Plaid Cymru MS Cefin Cambell described the reply as showing a negative attitude towards the Welsh language and called it an incredible lack of respect and a dinosaur-like attitude. The Welsh Labour government aims for one million Welsh speakers by 2050, and the Welsh Language Commissioner encourages MPs to use both official languages. First Minister Eluned Morgan said she was eager to see the language promoted, and Independent member Rhys ab Owen urged Morgan to ask Stevens to use both languages.
