Zandanshatar Gombojav has been appointed as Mongolia's new Prime Minister, replacing Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene amidst widespread protests against corruption and economic troubles. The appointment was approved by a significant majority in parliament. Public dissatisfaction grew as demonstrators criticized the lavish lifestyles of politicians during a time of economic decline. Oyun-Erdene's failure to retain confidence and declining public trust in corruption oversight agencies fueled these protests, particularly among the youth, whose demonstrations reflected broader frustrations with rising living costs and stagnant wages.
Zandanshatar told the State Great Khural, whose lawmakers overwhelmingly approved his elevation to the premiership by 108 out of the 117 members present.
However, public trust in that body and the wider judiciary is scant following a slew of high-profile graft scandals coupled with a conspicuous lack of prosecutions or accountability.
