On July afternoons in Wimberley, Texas, visitors enjoy the town's attractions, contrasting sharply with its past. In 2015, a flood caused significant destruction, claiming at least 12 lives and damaging numerous structures. Since then, Wimberley has implemented safety measures for future flood preparedness. However, recent flooding in nearby Kerr County has reignited concerns and emotions among residents. Business owner Natalie Meeks reflects on the challenges of recalling their past experiences during such events, as memories of loss and survival remain vivid despite current calm conditions.
On Memorial Day weekend in 2015, the Blanco River suddenly rose more than 40 feet in the middle of the night, carrying away nearly everything in its path.
Since then, the small town of roughly 3,000 has focused on rebuilding itself with new safety measures and alert systems with financial help from the state.
Residents and officials say that deadly flooding in nearby Kerr County has reinforced the need for more preparedness in flood-prone areas like Wimberley.
It's really hard for us to watch the news right now, because it's just so eerily similar to what we went through that night 10 years ago.
