A weekend fishing trip turned disastrous for a couple from Guatemala and El Salvador, who were arrested in the Everglades for lacking identification. After being separated at a local jail, the wife, who was breastfeeding their infant, panicked due to her health issues and inability to calm the baby. They communicated through taps on the wall for hours. While she was released with an ankle monitor, her husband was moved to another detention facility, leaving her uncertain of his whereabouts and required to leave the country within three months.
M. took a break to breastfeed in their car, when her husband was approached by a fish and wildlife officer, asking for their fishing license.
Unable to show a driver's license, the couple were arrested and taken to a local jail where they were separated.
M. says she began to panic. She's diabetic, she'd been nursing the baby and didn't have enough water to drink.
She was required to wear an ankle monitor and ordered to leave the country within three months.
