Afghan asylum seeker dies in ICE custody, US advocacy group says
"Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal, who was living in a Dallas suburb with his wife and six children while his asylum case remained pending, was arrested by federal agents outside his apartment on Friday morning while taking his children to school, said a statement from Shawn VanDiver, president of the military veteran-led group AfghanEvac."
"ICE said Paktyawal was eating breakfast when medical staff noted that his tongue had become swollen, prompting a medical response. He was declared dead only after multiple attempts at resuscitation, the agency said."
"Paktyawal, a former Afghan special forces soldier who had worked alongside US army special forces since 2005, was evacuated from Afghanistan with his family in 2021 when the United States withdrew its military after a war lasting two decades."
Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal, a 41-year-old Afghan immigrant who previously worked with US military forces, died in ICE custody in Texas less than 24 hours after his arrest. Paktyawal, who was living in a Dallas suburb with his wife and six children while awaiting asylum case resolution, was detained by federal agents on Friday morning. ICE reported he experienced tongue swelling while eating breakfast on Saturday and died despite resuscitation attempts. His death represents at least the 12th ICE custody death in 2025 and the 31st in 2024. Paktyawal was a former Afghan special forces soldier evacuated to the US in 2021 following the military withdrawal from Afghanistan.
