Jamie Nicholls, 48, crashed his van into a stationary car on the M32 motorway near Bristol on August 22, 2024, while looking down for a cigarette. The collision killed 68-year-old Michael Stone and triggered a multi-vehicle pile-up involving five vehicles total. Stone's passenger sustained seven broken ribs and a head injury. Nicholls pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. He received a 14-month suspended prison sentence for 18 months, 12-month driving disqualification with extended test requirement, 60-day curfew, and additional penalties. Stone's widow expressed devastation at losing 40 years of marriage and future memories.
