'I don't know how I'm alive': Fan discusses his 21-foot fall from stands at Pirates game
"I don't know how I'm alive."
""I'm doing better than what I was, that's for sure," said Markwood, who was shown during the interview walking around outside PNC Park wearing a cast on his left forearm."
Kavan Markwood, 20, fell 21 feet from the stands to the field at PNC Park during a Pirates–Cubs game on April 30. He flipped headfirst over the railing above the Clemente Wall and landed on the warning track. Training staffs from both teams tended to him on the field before he was carted off to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. Injuries included fractures to his back, neck and every rib plus a punctured lung; he has no feeling in two fingers and wakes in pain daily. Police classified the fall as accidental, and a 21-year-old acquaintance faces misdemeanor charges for furnishing alcohol to a minor with a preliminary hearing scheduled in September. Markwood is ambulatory while recovering and wore a cast on his left forearm during recent public appearances.
