LA braces for Marines as California sues to stop military involvement
Briefly

Downtown Los Angeles witnessed an overnight curfew following incidents of looting amidst protests against immigration enforcement. The city reported numerous arrests stemming from curfew violations and failure to disperse. Despite the federalization of National Guard troops and the deployment of Marines, legal experts caution that military cannot act as police due to regulations like the Posse Comitatus Act. While there are exceptions under the Insurrection Act, President Trump has not pursued this option. As of now, the troops are not actively engaged in the city but are undergoing civil disturbance training.
"For sure, they can't arrest," says William Banks, noting that the Posse Comitatus law restricts military involvement in domestic law enforcement, even when federalized.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the deployment of National Guard troops and Marines as necessary for maintaining law and order during ongoing protests in Los Angeles.
