Man found guilty of raping teenage girl at Rockland migrant shelter in 2024
"The man was later released on bail in July 2024 "due to the inconsistencies in the evidence and the alleged victim's version of events, lack of physical evidence, and [because] the surveillance did not support the claim," his lawyer, Brian Kelley, told The Boston Globe at the time. The following month, he was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers."
"Immigration officials intended to deport Alvarez back to Haiti in October 2024, but the judge paused the proceedings to prevent the case from being halted. However, he imposed a higher bail of $150,000, as Alvarez's bail was initially $500. Alvarez's trial began Sept. 4, with the victim and her father providing witness testimony, the reported. Both witnesses gave their testimony in Haitian Creole, with their answers to the prosecution's questions being translated into English for the jury."
Cory Alvarez, 27, was convicted in Plymouth Superior Court on a child rape charge aggravated by a ten-year age difference for an alleged March 2024 assault at a Comfort Inn in Rockland used as an emergency shelter for migrants. The 15-year-old victim, also a migrant from Haiti, received hospital treatment. Alvarez previously pleaded not guilty and faced an additional force-related charge that was later dropped. He entered the United States legally under a federal program and underwent background checks before shelter admission. He was arrested March 13, released on bail in July, detained by ICE the following month, faced deportation paused by a judge, had bail increased, and proceeded to trial in September with testimony translated from Haitian Creole.
