Man pleads not guilty to shooting Boston police officer during Roxbury chase
"When officers approached to investigate, Rice allegedly took off and led police on a brief chase. As the foot pursuit continued onto nearby Kenilworth Street, police allege Rice fired a gun at the officers and struck one of them in the arm. Police returned fire and struck Rice, and both he and the wounded officer were taken to local hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said."
"According to Boston police, Rice had a loaded firearm with an extended magazine on him, as well as two plastic bags "containing a white, rock-like substance." In addition to the officer who was shot, three other officers were treated at local hospitals for injuries that were not life-threatening, the department said. It was not immediately clear how the three additional officers were wounded."
Daiquan Rice, 31, was shot multiple times during an early-morning foot pursuit in Roxbury and pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, possession of a Class B drug, and multiple firearms offenses. He was ordered held without bail pending a Sept. 23 dangerousness hearing. Boston police say he ran when officers approached a group loitering in General Gourdin and African American Veterans Memorial Park and allegedly fired at officers during a chase on Kenilworth Street, striking one officer in the arm. Police returned fire and struck Rice; both were treated at local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities report a loaded firearm with an extended magazine and two plastic bags containing a white, rock-like substance were recovered. Three other officers received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Mayor Michelle Wu and Police Commissioner Michael Cox briefed at the scene.
