""We can sit here and give all the political theater that we want. The question is, are we actually representing the constituency of Missouri with our congressional delegation?" Republican State Sen. Rick Brattin, who represents Kansas City suburbs, said this week. "A seven-to-one map does that.""
""We're no longer the Show Me State," said state Sen. Stephen Webber, of Columbia."
""Missouri First""
The Missouri state Senate approved a new congressional map by a 21-11 vote that would shift a Democratic-held seat toward Republicans. The map now goes to Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe, who promoted a "Missouri First" plan he says reflects conservative values. Republicans say the redraw will produce seven Republican-leaning districts and one Democratic district, aligning with statewide election results and protecting GOP chances in next year’s midterms. Opponents vow legal challenges and a possible referendum, arguing that mid-decade redistricting is unconstitutional and that the plan dilutes Black voters' strength around Kansas City. The current delegation is six Republicans and two Democrats.
