Unfortunately, the last two decades have seen a significant decline in local news outlets, with Oregon losing 71% of its newspaper staff from 2017 to 2022. This has created a void filled with less credible sources. In response, Oregon proposes Senate Bill 686 to rejuvenate local news by injecting funds, supporting job creation, and fostering innovation, which could serve as a model for other states looking to revitalize their local media landscapes.
