In a recent ruling by military judge Col. Matthew N. McCall, a defendant's confession was thrown out due to the C.I.A.'s use of torture, including beatings and sleep deprivation. Even more concerning was the prolonged isolation and questioning that Ammar al-Baluchi faced from 2003 to 2006, which the judge deemed just as egregious as physical torture. Baluchi, charged as Ali Abdul Aziz Ali and linked to the 9/11 attacks as a relative of mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, was subjected to uncharged detainment and solitary confinement.
The judge ruled that the prisoner's statements were obtained through the C.I.A.'s use of torture, including beatings and sleep deprivation.
The subsequent isolation and relentless questioning of the prisoner from 2003 to 2006 was found to be just as egregious as the physical torture.
