A private jet took off from Provo Airport about an hour after the shot and vanished from radar five miles away, prompting speculation that a gunman fled via the flight. Businessman Derek Maxfield identified himself as the owner of the jet registered N888KG and denied any connection to the shooting. He called the claims baseless and said the plane’s disappearance from public tracking systems complied with an agreement with the FAA. He stated the aircraft left Provo at about 1.20pm MT with two pilots, no passengers, and landed at 1.55pm MT in Page, Arizona.
