The Trump administration welcomed a group of 59 white South Africans as refugees, amidst a political backdrop of controversial immigration policies and claims of violence against Afrikaner farmers. This group, largely composed of Afrikaners, was greeted by officials who expressed respect for their past struggles. President Trump's statements about a supposed genocide against white farmers persist despite contradicting data and strong rebuffs from the South African government, which asserts that crime affects all citizens similarly. The administration's claims regarding land seizures have also been criticized as inaccurate.
"Welcome to the land of the free," US Deputy Secretary of State Christoph Landau said as he greeted the group. "I want you all to know that you are really welcome here and that we respect what you have had to deal with these last few years."
On Monday, US President Donald Trump repeated disputed claims, popular with the far right, that white farmers in South Africa are "being killed" and even facing "genocide."
South Africa's government has strongly rejected the claim. "White farmers get affected by crime just like any other South Africans who do get affected by crime."
The Trump administration has also falsely accused the South African government of seizing land belonging to white farmers, referring to a new land expropriation law.
